The First Week of School

Back to School

A change to this year that will be different from previous years is Back to School Night.  Previously, Back to School Night has been the night before school.  In the interest of teacher preparation, nervous excitement amongst students and parents to meet their teachers, or pick up their schedule, this event was moved back a night.  Hopefully by having this event on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00, students will be able to have a good night's rest the night before the beginning of school on Thursday.

I asked my children last week what they most looked forward to at the beginning of the school year. My oldest child told me basketball, and my youngest two children told me lunch.  Just like every parent I worry about my kids when they go to school.  What will they say?  I hope they get good grades?  Will other kids be nice to them?  Have I taught them to look for the positive in situations?  Will they be nice to other kids?  Are they respectful?  Will they make excuses?  Can I stand back and allow them to learn from adversity?  All of these questions, and all my nervousness, and they can’t wait to play basketball and eat lunch.  I am excited for my children’s journey and I know that we have a great staff that will prepare them to be successful!  I hope you are excited too as we continue to work together to ensure all our children are prepared to become successful citizens.

I received a question from a reader last week, “How can we as a community provide our students with the best education possible?”  This question is exactly why in my opinion Alva is the best community in Oklahoma.  I responded to the question by encouraging involvement in our children’s educational process.  One way to do this is through our mentoring program with elementary students.  This is a great opportunity to be involved in our students success by meeting once a week and reading to a student.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact one of the elementary schools.

You may have noticed on our Facebook page the professional development schedule for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week.  Check out the schedule if you get a chance.  We are excited about the learning opportunities that our teachers are providing for one another, and with some of the training from outside agencies.

Let’s have a great first week!

Sincerely,

Tim Argo
